Bold Trailers is looking for a mechanically minded trade assistant for their Caringbah workshop. As NSW’s leading trailer repair specialist centre you will be joining a growing company and opportunities for advancement will be available for the right person. Males and females encouraged to apply. Automotive experience preferred but not essential. A desire to succeed is a must.

This position is 38 hours each week and you must hold a current NSW driver’s license.

* Tasks include (but not limited to):

* Assistance with Boat and Trailer Fit Ups
* General Trailer assembly
* Manual Labour and Heavy Lifting
* Unloading of trailers and accessories
* Cleaning of workshop, parts, yard and accessories
* Customer Service, Phones and basic admin
* Assistance with basic trailer repairs and servicing

The successful applicant must be able to follow instruction and be willing to learn new skills. Reliability, punctuality, diligence and honesty are essential. English language skills essential. Tow Ball Load

The tow ball load is the amount of weight the fully loaded trailer vertically imposes in the tow bar of the towing vehicle.

If you have a compliance plate on your trailer (all trailers built after August 1989 must have a compliance plate) will list the trailers GTM (Gross Trailer Mass). The difference between the ATM and the GTM will be the trailers ball load.

Just like all other towing specifications, the ball load must not be exceeded.

If you own a small trailer than the ball load is not usually a issue with your towing unless your towing vehicle has a low ball load specification. This can be the case with many small vehicles and some European vehicles. Heavier trailers such as horse floats and caravans can often place a heavy ball load onto the towing vehicle.

The ball load is a function of the trailers position and the way that the trailer is loaded

We can be measure the ball load of your trailer on our weighbridge. This can be done in 2 ways.

1. When at the weighbridge, disconnect the fully loaded trailer from the towing vehicle and place only the trailers drawbar (via the jockey wheel) on the weighbridge scale.

2. Place your fully loaded trailer completely onto the weighbridge. 2 weights will be recorded - one while the trailer is still attached to the towing vehicle and one after unhitching the trailer. By subtracting the hitched weight from the unhitched weight you will know how much weight is being imposed on your tow ball and also how heavy your fully loaded trailer weights.

The ball load is often approximately 10% of the trailers ATM but you should not rely on this "guessed" weight for every trailer. The best way to determine the ball load is always to use a weighbridge to check that you are complying with your trailers and towing vehicles specifications.

Bold Trailers Now Has A Trade Certified Weigh Bridge

We are excited to announce that we have just had a Trade Certified Weigh Bridge installed at the Bold Trailers workshop located at 5 Captain Cook Drive, Caringbah NSW 2229.

Bold Trailers can now provide weigh bridge tickets for registration requirements for your vehicle or trailer.

The weigh bridge will be open 5 1/2 days a week during normal trading hours for Bold Trailers.

Weigh Bridge tickets are needed for the registration of unregistered vehicles in NSW. This can include vehicles and trailers that have run out of rego, new vehicles and trailers that have never been registered, vehicles and trailers that have been modified and imported vehicles and trailers that need to be registered in NSW.

You can also use a weigh bridge to check if the boat and trailer combined load does not exceed your trailers maximum towing capacity.

Child Seat Fittings

Bold Trailers is an authorised child restraint fitting station.

The staff at Bold Trailers have undergone training on behalf through the RTA to be accredited and the workshop has been approved as an authorised child restraint fitting station.

Child seats fitted include baby capsules, rearward facing child seats, forward facing child seats and booster seats. Our staff also install anchor bolts, extension straps and gated buckles.

All accredited staff have undergone intensive training in the inspection and installation of child seats.

If you need help in choosing the correct child seat for your car and your child please feel free to call us at the workshop on 02 8544 8114.

Child seats are installed by appointment only. Just give the workshop a call when you would like to book in. Fittings take approximately 20 minutes and are completed while you wait. You will receive an RTA installation certificate as part of the installation that you can keep in your glovebox. This certificate is occasionally asked for by midwives in some private hospitals.

Double Demerit Points This Easter Long Weekend

Dunbier Releases New Covered Winches

This week Dunbier has released a new covered winch onto the market. These winches are a safe and easy way to pull a boat back up onto a trailer.

All components are coated for corrosive protection and the winches are fitted with a high quality webbing strap.

The winch cover hides the gears, making it much safer for fingers.

The new covered winch is available in 3 sizes - 2 single speed winches - 3:1 and 5:1 and a tri speed winch 10:1/5:1/1:1.

This is the only winch the largest boat trailer manufacturer in Australia recommends and uses.

Rosehill Trailer Boat Show 2012

Christian and I packed up the workshop (shelving and all) and took the team (Rory, Ryan and Gary) out to the Rosehill Trailer Boat Show last weekend. Well, we were overwhelmed at the support by both the public and our fellow marine business owners.

Wow, you all had so many questions - some easier to answer than others without seeing your trailers but we endeavoured to answer them to the best of our ability and hopefully solve your trailer problems (or lead you in the right direction for professional help).

There were many common questions and problems so I thought I would recap on a few of them:

1. 2" couplings on imported trailers - After consultation with the RTA these are deemed illegal as they do not meet the ADR guidelines for registraion in NSW. Please call us to book in to have your coupling changed to an Australian Standards / ADR approved coupling. There are many risks associated with this size coupling - the most obvious being that it is too big for 50mm tow balls and the boat and trailer can pop off the tow ball while driving.

2. Brakes on trailers. All trailer and boat combinations with a combined weight of over 750kg require a braking system. The most common braking system on this weight trailer is mechanical brakes. If you trailer and boat combination is over 2 tonne you require hydraulic / electric brakes.

3. "I have bearing buddies - I don't need to change my bearings!" - WOW - a huge error of judgement here too. Bearing Buddies have a place on trailers and help prolong the life of your bearings but you still need to service your trailer regularly. If you do not have bearing buddies we recommend that you change your bearings every 12 - 18 months. If you do have bearing buddies and do not use your trailer very often you could stretch this out to 18 - 24 months at the longest to stop major problems and the possibility of your bearings collapsing.

Driving Faster Saves Lives

There have been 316 rescues across the Cronulla beaches between July 2011 and December 2011. Sutherland Shire Council Lifeguards now have a brand new tool in their race to save lives – a brand new custom built reverse jet ski trailer that has reduced their rescue response times – letting the lifeguards get to people in trouble and save lives faster.

Each summer Sutherland Shire Council Lifeguards complete countless rescues and first aid treatments. With over 2 million beach visitors annually it’s easy to understand that some days on the beach can be quite hectic.

Whist the Red and Yellow flags and safety signage are extremely important in establishing the patrolled swimming area and identifying rips, PWCs have become a key craft in performing rescues.

"Their speed and agility in the surf zone is unmatched" identifies Councils Lifeguard Manager, Brad Whittaker. He also points out the need to be able to launch and retrieve the PWC as being very important.

"Council required a trailer that facilitated quick launching but also reduced OHS injuries for staff when recovering the PWC from the sand. Importantly the trailer needed to have RTA approval because we often need to drive it to remote locations and servicing. Bold Trailers designed a trailer that ticked all those boxes and we are very happy with the final product". Brad Whittaker.

The Jet Ski trailer is being used to patrol Cronulla’s beaches – Cronulla, North Cronulla, Elouera, Wanda and Greenhills beaches.
The trailer holds the Jet Ski in a reverse position – The front of the Jet Ski faces the water.
There were 316 rescues on Cronulla beaches between July 2011 and December 2011.
The new trailer has reduced rescue response times – i.e. lifeguards reach people needing to be rescued faster thus reducing the possibility of drowning.
The trailer can launch and retrieve a jet ski in both a forward or reverse facing position. This is revolutionary in a Jet Ski trailer.
