More on Trailer Repairs
Even the best trailer can break down at times, whether damaged in some kind of accident, parts wearing out, or just lack of routine maintenance. In fact, many common trailer repairs can be prevented if you just take the time to maintain your trailer. The list of common repairs is much too long to offer here, but here are some of the most common reasons for trailer repairs that can be prevented with routine maintenance.
One of the most common trailer repairs is the electrical wiring. This can be right at the wiring harness, where it connects to the plug on your vehicle. Some people allow the trailer plug to dangle, exposing the electrical connections to water and weather. A simple fix for this is that when leaving your trailer parked for long periods of time, put a small plastic bag over the plug and secure it with a rubber band. This keeps the weather from corroding the tabs. Having a simple volt meter on hand to check your wiring once in a while can avoid costly repairs down the line.
Other common trailer repairs are hitch (coupling) repairs. This can be because the hitch itself is no longer secure, or the trailer jack (jockey wheel) gets damaged. In most cases the jockey wheel itself gets damaged because owners forget to make sure the jockey wheel is completely in the upright position before leaving. Sometimes the mechanism itself freezes up, and needs to be repaired or replaced.
Simply recheck the jockey before moving the trailer, making sure the jockey wheel leg itself has enough clearance. Some jockey wheels have a small hole or grease nipple, and oil or grease should be applied twice a year. The trailer hitch/coupling as well as the jockey wheel can also be covered with plastic to keep internal parts from getting damaged in severe weather conditions.
One of the most dangerous problems that happen is with the axles and brakes. A broken axle or a broken brake caliper can cause all kinds of different problems, one of the worst case scenarios would be completely wrecking your trailer and vehicle. Brakes should be checked and inspected on a regular basis, and the brake pads replaced before they start to squeal.
When you are hearing that consistent squealing sound, that is a clear indication that the brake pads have worn down to the mounting plate. When you have your brakes inspected, you should also have the axles inspected and bearings greased, especially if you are traveling through rough or muddy terrain a lot.
We recommend that you change your bearings and service your axle every 12 - 18 months.
You can't prevent all damage or repairs, but keeping up a regular maintenance routine can help prevent costly problems later on.
